"YOUNGER" PROS RETURNING TO DECATUR FOR TWO-REGION SHOWDOWN
By Al Pote, For September 15, 2009

The PBA Midwest Region is combining forces with the Ohio-based Central Region to stage the Brunswick Decatur Open on September 25-27 at Spare Time Lanes.

To increase public entries, the tournament directors have scheduled the Pro-Am for Saturday night, September 26, at 6pm, which will follow the qualifying session from earlier in the day. The Pro-Am entry fee is $20 for adults and $10 for youth bowlers.

Pro participation in regional events is optional; however, the tournament committee has extended invitations to top exempt pros Pete Weber, Steve Jaros and Jeff Carter. Also scheduled to compete is Jason Queen, the 1997 ABC Masters champion and winner of five PBA Regional tournament championships.

John Berry defeated Pekin's Luke Wojton 247-231 to win the CIC scratch singles tournament at Spare Time on Sunday. James Box, who registered an 804 series (279-258-267) in Friday's Cavalier Classic League, finished fifth.

Also earning places on the award list were Bobby Harrison, with a 300 in the Sept. 4 Cavalier Classic League, and Shawn Reed, with his first 12-bagger of the season in the N & W Fellowship League on Sept. 7.

Tom Adcock has gotten off to a fast start, with three series over 770 in the first two weeks of the season. On Aug. 29, Adcock competed in the Petersen Classic. The 2005 Petersen champion came within a strike of taking the lead, settling for an 8-game total of 1626, which put him in 7th place when play concluded that day.

Going into the final weekend, another former USBC Team champion, Glen Ellyn's Gregg Zicha, led the "Pete" with a 1645 aggregate. Former Decatur resident Joey Czerniak will earn one of the $950 prizes with his 1546 total from late spring.

SPECIAL PERFECTION: Lost in the modern ocean of award scores is the magic found in a bowler's first taste of perfection. For 44-year-old Mike Lacox, his premiere 300 to conclude the Spare Time Match Play League brought back pleasant memories.

"I want to dedicate my 300 to my mom and dad," Lacox said. "They're both gone now, but I remember when I was learning the gamehow they always encouraged me to keep trying and knock them all down."

Lacox averaged 203 last season and found the final frame easy to handle. "I wasn't nervous at all; maybe a little on the last ball, but not enough to throw me off," Lacox said.

SENIORS DEADLINE: Reservations for preferred squads in the 31st Annual Illinois Senior Open Championships will close on Saturday (Sept. 19). The state tournament for certified male and female bowlers 55-and-older will be held at Bertrand Lanes in Waukegan from Oct. 24 through Nov. 8.

After reservations close, unfilled squad times will be opened to all bowlers through Oct. 10. Decatur USBC BA President Phil Sturgeon is accepting new bowlers for his squad, and interested bowlers can call either 428-2222 or 875-3141 for more information.

The veteran brother tandem of Bob and Harry Logan are scheduled to defend their 2008 State Doubles title in the four-division competition.
