HOWELL, YOUNG EARN ADULT-YOUTH BOWLING PERFECTION (summer 2010 summary, only printed here)
By Al Pote: For August 10, 2010

Gabe Howell and Tyler Young were the headliners during Decatur summer bowling, tying a world record on June 28 by rolling perfect scores in the same game.

In the opening match of the Monday Family Fun League at Pla-Mor Lanes, Young and Howell strung 12-baggers to achieve a team score of 600, a feat that had not been accomplished nationally in the previous 18 months.

From a century of USBC statistics compiled through July 22, only forty-two doubles teams across the world are shown to have bowled dual 300's in the same game. However, the records do not distinguish if any of those pairings were of the adult-youth variety.

For Young, it was his second 300 of the season. In fall leagues, Young averaged 227 at Pla-Mor and 221 at Spare Time, and he entered his perfect night at a 232 clip.

For Howell, the perfect game capped off his best season, with a high average of 232, six certified 300's and a high set of 806. On the record-setting Monday, Howell fired a 744 series while Young added a 652.

Another summer highlight was supplied by Taylorville youth Alex Clark, who shot his first Decatur 300 in the Pla-Mor Junior-Major Trio League on July 28. This fall, Clark will room with fellow Decatur standout Andrew Larck at Vincennes (IN) University, and both will compete for a spot on their bowling team.

Hannah Moore, the 2008-2009 Girls' Bowler of the Year, will attend McKendree College and will also battle for a spot on their ladies' squad.

PBA NATIONAL SENIORS: Entries are being accepted for the National PBA Senior Pro-Am Tournament at Spare Time Lanes on Saturday afternoon. Squad times are 2pm and 6pm. At 4pm, there will be a Live Auction inside the center, and the proceeds will benefit the Race for the Cure.

In the Pro-Am, bowlers of all ages and abilities will roll three games, with a new pro partner for each game. The format will be 9-Pin No-Tap, and the cost is $20 for adults and $10 for youths.

The Professional Bowlers Association senior members will start the 2010 Pepsi Open with eight games of qualifying at 9am on Sunday and Monday, after which the field will be cut to the top-32. Those players will return at the same hour on Tuesday for six series of matches, with the championship rounds slated for approximately 6pm.

The PBA's all-time title-holder and Senior Tour rookie, Walter Ray Williams, Jr., is scheduled to compete, and he will be joined by several Hall-of-Famers, including Johnny Petraglia, Wayne Webb, Tom Baker, Mark Williams and Dave Soutar.

Pro-Am entrants could be matched with any of the above stars or with PBA champions Roy Buckley, Bob Chamberlain, John Forst, Bob Kelly, Kenny Parks and Harry Sullins. Local favorites Gene Vincent and Bennie Holman are also in the Pepsi Senior Open field.

The week's action will open with the Senior Shootout, on Friday night at 7pm.
