COOK RETURNS TO 300 LIST, WILCOX LEADS NEWCOMER CHARGE
By Al Pote: For February 16, 2010

Both experience and youth were served during the past two weeks as Mike Cook rolled his first perfect game in 13 years, while Michael Wilcox added his fifth career ring.

The 56-year-old Cook rolled his third career perfect game on Wednesday in Spare Time's E-Z Time League. Cook's other 300 scores came in 1994 and 1997.

Michael Wilcox spun his second 300 of the season on Feb. 5 in Spare Time's Strikers League. The 21-year-old Wilcox already has five 12-baggers on his USBC resume.

Chris Henneman continues to hobble around on a bad left leg, but his scores have been healthy, with a 279/787 on Jasper Street and a 286 game in the Pla-Mor Men's League.

In Wednesday's Sunshiners' session, Shawn Reed was on the brink of perfection until a 10-pin stood on his final ball of game one. Reed now has fifteen career 299 games.

Tyler Young added to his high-score chart with a 290 game and 782 series in the Feb. 6 session of Pla-Mor's Junior-Major League. Meanwhile, Gabe Howell continues to dominate locally, firing a 793 and a 781 in the past two weeks. The big sets came on the heels of a pair of perfect games in consecutive Sunshiners' League sessions.

Gabe's wife Cynthia is nearing double-figures in her seasonal 700-count. Her latest onslaught was a 723 in the Good Time Girls' League. Christa Jordan's 258 propelled her to a 703 set in last Monday's N & W Cannonball League. Jo Fellows (163 average) fired a career-high 278 in Spare Time league play.

Carla Scribner reached the Honor Roll with a season-high 277 in the Cream & Sugar League, while Bobbie Young topped the Pla-Mor distaff list with a 258 in the Odd Couples League.

In the Easter Seals League Challenge, Blake Shelton (864 handicap series) and Tara Bunning (806) took top honors at Spare Time, earning $15 each in the annual week-long fundraiser.

IHSA ROUNDUP: Eisenhower's high-school girls' squad suffered individual and team heartbreak at the Rock Island sectional on Feb. 6.

The Lady Panthers, led by coach Shirlene Wilkin, finished one spot away from State qualification, ending up in third place, 54 pins behind Rock Island and 98 sticks behind sectional champion Dixon.

Individually, junior Haley Baser finished fourth with a 6-game total of 1194, and sophomore teammate Chelsie Finch was sixth, averaging 195. Unfortunately, the Panther pair did not qualify for last weekend's State finals.

Two of the bowlers ahead of Baser and Finch qualified by being members of the two advancing teams. The IHSA allowed for six additional individuals statewide, based on pin differential, and neither Baser nor Finch were able to make the cut.

Glenn Kraemer's MacArthur squad ended the 2009-2010 season with a 14th-place finish in Rock Island.

ROAD WIN: Tom Adcock fired a 300 game and helped his team to a 3729 series and a championship in the most recent Greater Iowa Team Challenge tournament. Moline's Mike Peters, Adcock's teammate in Iowa and in the annual USBC Open, fired an 837 series to lead the fivesome, which also included Jason Queen.

During the first week of February, Adcock reached the sixth round of match-play in the Las Vegas High Roller Tournament before falling to Pennsylvania's Dan Pfeifer 255-249. Those two games were the highest scores registered during round six.
